Suresh Raina: Who will take his No.3 spot in CSK?

With the sudden departure of Suresh Raina from the CSK camp in UAE due to various reasons, the 3-time IPL champs will be without their most experienced campaigner. He is a very important cog in the CSK line up.

Raina is a match-winner with the bat and a brilliant fielder in every area of the ground. He is a useful off-spinner too and a partnership breaker. He is a true asset to any team in the shortest format of the game.

The recently retired Indian cricketer is the 2nd highest run-getter in IPL history with 5368 runs. The left-hander has scored over 400 runs a season on 9 occasions which is the most by any player. His void will be very much difficult to fill for the men in yellow.

Suresh Raina is the highest run-scorer for CSK with 4527 runs and is also the most capped player in IPL with 193 games. He is called Mr.IPL for a reason and this is huge for CSK even before the IPL has started.

Players who can replace Suresh Raina in the coveted No.3 spot in the CSK lineup.

There is absolutely no doubt that Suresh Raina has been an absolute superstar for CSK over the past 12 seasons on IPL. Yet someone or the other has to come in his spot for the upcoming edition.

Even though Ruturaj Gaikwad is down with COVID at this point, he will all probability will replace Suresh Raina in the playing XI. The 23-year-old right-handed batsman from Pune was picked in 2019 IPL auctions but didn’t get a chance to play last year.

In the 2018-19 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was the leading run-scorer with 365 runs at an average of over 45. This prompted Super Kings to acquire him at the auctions.

Gaikwad’s name has been making rounds in the domestic arena for quite some time. One can hope that this talented youngster will be able to fit into the big shoes of Suresh Raina

MS Dhoni might spring a surprise by sending Sam Curran in the top order and use him in the spot vacated by Suresh Raina. The left-hander showed moments of brilliance in his debut season last year for KXIP taking a hat trick against Delhi.

But he failed to be consistent and played only 9 matches for the side claiming 10 wickets and a solitary 50 with the bat. The Super Kings brought in the auctions for a whopping 6.5 crores. He has opened in the past, but we have wait and see if CSK uses him at the top.

He has been a solid player for CSK over the years.

Faf Du Plessis over the years has a consistent player for the Chennai Super Kings since his debut in 2012. He has many match winning innings and single-handedly won them the playoffs against SRH in 2018.

Du Plessis has scored 1853 runs in 71 games in the IPL at a strike rate of 126 and averages a good 31. He has played at No.3 for SA and looks like one of the best candidates to take Raina’s spot.
